Words That Didn't Exist Before

As I navigate though this thing called the job search and money issues, I have noticed that there terms that did not exist a generation or two ago. No mater what age you are, you need to be familiar the following 21st century terms.


1. Underemployed. Of course you are making money from your job. But do you make enough to cover everything? If the answer is no then you are underemployed. Even if you are working a full time job with benefits and overtime, that's just one source of income.

2. Gig Economy. If you working a short term job or two then you are part of the gig economy. This particular economy is a new trend in the workforce that includes freelance, temp work. Diane Mulcahy's book The Gig Economy this particular economy in more detail.

3. Startup. If you are doing a new a entrepreneurial venture, that is what is known as a startup. You would plenty of these in this new economy and job market since entrepreneurship is on the rise.

4. Crowdfunding. Do you need some money to fund a project or venture? You should see if there are any crowdfunding websites. Lulu.com has got an amazing book called The Crowdfunding Handbook: Raise Money for Your Small Business or Start-Up with Equity Funding Portals

5. Digital Nomad. Do you work independently of a location? If the answer is yes that makes you a digital nomad. You can take your laptop and work with you while you are traveling. Just make you have a good wi-fi connection in your location.

6. Telecommute. Do you have an arrangement with your employer to work at home? This option is what is known as telecommuting. You would save money on a typical commute.

7. Remote Job. If you have a job that is away from an office, then you work in a remote job. Remote jobs are easy to find in this digital economy that we live in, However, just like at a brick and mortar job, doing your research is a must.

8. Affiliate Marketing. Do you want to be paid commission from your website? Then you should give affiliate marketing a try. What you do is make an arrangement with an online retailer to pay you by making referrals.

9. Serial Entrepreneur. If you are an entrepreneur who has more than one venture then that makes you a serial entrepreneur. You could use more than one venture as a source of income.


10. Adulting. This one is a  21st century slang that you would see hashtaged on social media. Have you reached a point in your life where you are taking on responsibility as an adult?
